All day walk – 13 miles (21 km), total ascent 1676ft (511m)

A gentle hill walk around some of the most interestingly named spots in the Lammermuirs! The walk follows a route from the Writerspath burn car park, south of Johnscleugh (Garvald), via the Whiteadder reservoir to Trottingshaw and Priestlaw Hill.

Most of the walk will be on well-defined paths, vehicle tracks and two short sections on minor roads. There are no steep ascents – the 1676 ft (511m) are all gradual ascents.

We will follow the Whiteadder Water, crossing the B6355 to walk past Penshiel farm cottages along a vehicle track. Then on good paths over moorland to Trottingshaw. A short undulating road section will take us up Horseupcleugh where we return along a minor path over Wether Law and onto Priestlaw Hill. Then back to the car park.

The walk will be at a gentle pace including plenty of rest stops at scenic locations for drinks and lunch. We will expect to complete the walk in 6 -7 hours.

Note that the section over moorland can be muddy when it is, or has been, raining.

Bring a drink, snack and a packed lunch. Remember we are in Scotland(!), so bring a waterproof jacket and trousers and an extra layer of clothing to put on when we take a break. If you have binoculars, bring them along too as there is plenty of wildlife along the route.

Meeting point: a bus will leave from Haddington Corn Exchange at 9am, Friday 19th August. It may also be possible to pick-up/drop-off from  Gifford, please let the walk leader know if you would like this option.

Contact the walk leader Andre Coner for more information and to book your place on 07704 603147 or Andre.coner@gmail.com
