Walkfest ’22, East Lothian’s Festival of Walking and Wheeling, in partnership with Venturing Out CIC, is offering you the chance to join in a full-day walk to explore the winding tracks and trails to the South of Wallyford, in the beautiful East Lothian countryside.
This circular route will cover mostly farm tracks and trails, heading towards Carberry Woods, where we will be joined by a local expert on the history of Carberry and its surrounds. Following a tour of the woods, we will leave Carberry, heading towards the Pencaitland Railway Walk. We will join the Railway Walk, taking in the history of the area, before heading up to Elphinstone. From Elphinstone, we will pick up farm tracks towards Faside Castle then wind our way back down to Wallyford.
This walk covers mixed terrain – farm tracks, woodlands and very short road sections. The distance covered will be between 15 km and 20 km, and will depend on the pace of the group. There are options to extend or shorten the route as required. There are some climbs and descents but in the main, this walk is on easy, terrain.
Physicality:
A reasonable level of physical fitness is required for this walk.
Time:
Meet at 9.45am for a 10am start. We will aim to be finished by 4pm at the latest.
Place:
Meet at the car park of Wallyford Primary School, Salters Road, Wallyford, EH21 8LB
Unfortunately, the walk is not suitable for under 14s. Ideally people under 18 should be accompanied by an adult but please contact us to discuss your requirements.
What you need to bring:
- This is a walk over mixed terrain so we would advise wearing walking boots, sturdy shoes or trainers with a good grip.
- Water / drink
- Packed lunch and snacks
- Suncream
- Waterproof jacket and trousers (it is Scotland!)
