Take a break, take a walk!

This initiative as part of Walkfest ’22, the East Lothian Festival of Walking and Wheeling, is encouraging people who spend long hours at their desks to be a little more active.

Whether we are working from home or in the office, we all recognise the importance of taking regular breaks away from the screen. We often use this time to make ourselves a cuppa, move around a little. For the week of the Festival (15th to 21st august), we are suggesting that for one of these breaks, people take the opportunity to go for a short walk.

Walking a kilometre at a brisk pace takes most people between 10 and 15 minutes so if this is done every day of the working week, that’s roughly an extra hours activity (approximately 350 calories worth, if you’re counting!). so you can map your kilometre route by how long it takes you to complete it, or by using one of the many mapping tools and apps available.

Of course there are other benefits too. Walking is a great mood lifter, helps improve the body’s health and fitness and, if walking with other people, can offer the chance for a little social interaction.

That’s for the employee, what about the employer? All should recognise the benefits of having a healthier, happier and more connected workforce so why not encourage your staff to take a break and take a walk!

The Festival is working in partnership with SHINE who have developed an app that can help record your activity, great for motivation and for celebrating achievement.

However and wherever you take your break and take your walk, share your photos, comments, stories with Walkfest22 through our social media channels. We’d love to hear from you.
