Shoreline history – North Berwick from kirk to castle
North Berwick’s harbour and shoreline
A guided walk from North Berwick’s historic Kirk Ness and harbour along the shore to Castle Hill
Date: Tuesday August 25, 2026
Time: 10am to 12 noon
Meet: Scottish Seabird Centre
With: Walks Upon A Time
Starting on the Kirk Ness (home to the Seabird Centre) we will look at its early history, religious significance and, of course, witches before heading down into the historic harbour with its views across the Forth and its islands.
From there the aim is to head back along the East Beach discussing the historic uses of the shoreline before ending the walk at Castle Hill and perhaps climbing it to take in the view across the town and Bass Rock.
More information
The walk starts on footpaths around the harbour but does include steps and rough paving sections before heading onto the beach. The walk ends by a short climb up Castle Hill which can be muddy when wet and is fairly steep. This means that sturdy footwear is recommended with a good grip. The walk will be suitable for well-behaved dogs that are kept on the lead. The walk is suitable for those over the age of 10. There are public toilet facilities available at North Berwick harbour and customer toilet facilities available at the Scottish Seabird Centre. The Scottish Seabird Centre and The Rocketeer both have takeaway menus that can be accessed at the beginning and end of the walk. What to bring
This is Scotland so be prepared for changeable weather. Bring a waterproof jacket and a warm extra layer. A snack (or two) and water is also recommended.With... Walks Upon A Time
