Meet: Garvald Village Hall
Bus: Corn Exchange, Haddington, 9 am
With: Ramblers
Distance: 8 miles, Ascent: 300 m
The fourth day of the Cross-County Challenge is a shortish but challenging section.
Our walk begins at the village of Garvald, tucked away at the foot of the Lammermuir Hills. We start with a walk along the river before a short but steep climb to Stoneypath Tower (and its cannons!).
We will follow a very old route called the Herring Road. This was the way taken by fishwives from Dunbar as they made their way across the Lammermuirs to market in Lauder, a distance of over 30 miles, carrying heavy creels of cured herring on their backs.
Thankfully our journey today is not as long and, unlike the fishwives, we will have plenty of time to enjoy the stunning views across the county before descending to the finishing point for the day near Johnscleugh.
What to bring
Boots and waterproofs are essential. Bring a snack for morning coffee break and a packed lunch, a hot drink and sufficient water to keep hydrated, at least 1 litre. Also a mat or plastic sheet to sit on. We will not be stopping at cafes en route.
